KARL

Today many of Kansas’ future leaders came to my Washington DC office. They were from the Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership, Inc., or KARL, which is a not-for-profit organization committed to finding and developing future leaders of agriculture and rural communities in Kansas. Many thanks to Jack Lindquist, KARL’s President, for arranging their trip to DC and visit to my office.

Many issues came up during our talk including the upcoming Farm Bill. As a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee and former Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee this is and has been an issue high on my list of Kansas priorities. Recently I was appointed a conferee on the Farm Bill conference committee, the committee tasked with ironing out the differences between the House and Senate passed versions of the Farm Bill. This post will allow me to work on a conference report that reflects the best interests of Kansas and the nation’s farmers and ranchers.

As a conferee, I will continue to work to protect direct payments, the only commodity title program that provides direct assistance to producers when they have no crop to harvest. I am also going to work to ensure that the crop insurance program remains intact as a solid program that our producers and their lenders can count on.

When it come to Kansas Ag, our farmers want a good bill and I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work on it.
