Today I met with the Meals on Wheels Association of America Foundation (MOWAA). We talked about senior hunger in America and the work MOWAA is doing to help eliminate it.
Meals on Wheels volunteers don't just deliver food. They check up on a senior's well-being and help them feel safe. Volunteers are sometimes a senior’s only human contact for the day, and I know that a family must take great comfort in knowing that if they can’t be there, a volunteer is visiting their mother, father, grandfather, grandmother, sister, or brother every week. As co-chair of the Senate Rural Health Care Caucus, I understand the unique challenges that Meals on Wheels volunteers face in serving seniors living in rural areas. I am happy that MOWAA is kicking off a rural initiative this spring, and I am looking forward to working with them to improve the ability of Meals on Wheels to serve our rural seniors. It was great to see my friend Jane Metzger. Jane is the National Chairman for MOWAA’s Board of Directors, and she also heads up the Meals on Wheels organization in Shawnee and Jefferson Counties. I thanked her for her hard work and great efforts on behalf of MOWAA. I know our seniors in Kansas have a great deal of respect and appreciation for her leadership.
