Today was an especially eventful and exciting day in Kansas. I was honored to host First Lady Laura Bush at Rolling Ridge Elementary School in Olathe. Her visit helped to highlight the importance of reading and volunteerism in our schools and showcased our Kansas teachers’ dedication and commitment to kids.
While at Rolling Ridge Elementary we visited Mrs. Glenda Aguilar’s 4th grade class and participated in a vocabulary lesson with the students. After the classroom visit, we went to an all-school assembly where the First Lady and I honored several students with presidential awards for their community service.
One student collected food at school for the victims of the tornado in Greensburg, KS. She and her family then drove across the state to personally deliver the food collected. What an outstanding young student and a model for volunteerism to us all!
As a former teacher and current member of the Senate Education Committee, I know firsthand that our Kansas schools are one of our greatest assets. It was an honor to bring Mrs. Bush, who is also a former teacher and a librarian, to see some of our best and brightest in Kansas.
I want to thank Assistant Superintendent Dr. Gary George, Principal Lori Fielder, Counselor Suzie Turner, Administrative Assistant Jennifer Thompson, and the faculty and staff at Rolling Ridge Elementary who helped with this once-in-a-lifetime visit from Mrs. Bush. I know the students will remember this special guest for a long time to come.
