Senator Roberts: FEMA Honors Delegation Request for Public Assistance for Dickinson and Riley Counties

Jul 09 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Pat Roberts today announced that FEMA has approved expedited federal aid for Dickinson and Riley counties at his, Senator Sam Brownback and Congressman Jerry Moran’s request, to help the local governments there rebuild public facilities including the three schools destroyed after the June11 storms.

"After meeting with local government officials, it was clear that more assistance would be needed to jump start construction of the schools, especially given the short time frame before the start of the school year." Roberts said. "I’m grateful to Director Paulison for making these funds available as quickly as possible."

Last week Roberts, along with Senator Brownback and Congressman Moran, sent a letter to President Bush requesting expedited FEMA assistance for the storm damaged areas.

The Members said in the letter, "Chapman in Dickinson County was hit particularly hard during this storm. Every school in Chapman was demolished in the storm. In order to rebuild in time for the coming school year, funds are needed immediately to begin construction. We ask that particular attention be paid to the needs of our youth who are affected most directly by this destruction. Timeliness is of particular importance as the regular school year is little more than six weeks away."

With this declaration of Public Assistance Dickinson and Riley Counties will be reimbursed by FEMA 75% of qualified rebuilding costs.
